Belize has just moved much closer to Europe. The Belize Tourism Board has announced new air service with Discover Airlines, the Lufthansa Group’s leisure airline, connecting Frankfurt to Belize City beginning December 16, 2027. It is a new gateway for travelers from Germany and connecting European markets, and one of the most significant additions to Belize’s air map in years.
The seasonal service will operate twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays, through mid April 2028, a schedule built deliberately around Belize’s dry season. For European travelers who have long reached Belize through US connections, the route changes the mathematics of the trip entirely: one flight from the heart of Europe to the edge of the rainforest.
What the new route means for European travelers

Until now, most European visitors to Belize have connected through hubs like Houston, Miami, or Newark, adding a US layover, and US transit requirements, to every trip. The Frankfurt service removes that layer: Discover Airlines flies direct from one of Europe’s largest hubs, and through the Lufthansa Group network, travelers from across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the wider continent can connect seamlessly into Frankfurt and onward to Belize City.
The Thursday and Sunday schedule suits the classic European long haul holiday: ten days to two weeks in the sun, with flight days that bookend a full itinerary. And because the service runs from mid December through mid April, it delivers Europeans into Belize at precisely the right moment: the dry season, when the weather is at its finest and every corner of the country is open for adventure.
Why Belize is built for European travelers

Belize rewards the kind of traveler Europe sends: curious, nature loving, and hungry for culture as well as sunshine. It is the only English speaking country in Central America, compact enough to combine rainforest and reef in a single trip, and home to the second largest barrier reef in the world, ancient Maya cities, jungle rivers, and a cultural mix found nowhere else.
For German and European visitors used to long haul options like the Caribbean islands or Southeast Asia, Belize offers something fresher: a destination still uncrowded, still personal, where a two week trip can hold an underground river, a temple summit, a rainforest villa, and an island morning without ever feeling rushed.
The two week Belize formula for the new route

The route’s schedule makes a classic itinerary easy: fly into Belize City on a Thursday, head west to the Cayo District for the jungle half of the trip, ancient cities, caves, waterfalls, and river life, then finish on the cayes with reef days and sea air before the Sunday flight home. Ten days to two weeks splits beautifully between the two, and transfers between west and coast take only a few hours.
Seasoned visitors tend to put the jungle first: arrive, recover from the flight beside a river, adventure hard while energy is high, and save the island ease for the end.
Your rainforest base: Villa Massis

For the jungle chapter, the Cayo District in western Belize is the destination, and Villa Massis is the base. Set on the Mopan River in Bullet Tree Falls, minutes from San Ignacio and about two hours from the international airport, the resort is 100% Belizean owned and operated, with seven spacious villas, a pool, private jungle nature trails, and the Villa Massis Waterfront Restaurant and Bar right on the water, serving Belizean food from fresh local ingredients at riverside tables.
From here, the adventures European travelers cross an ocean for are minutes to a morning away: Xunantunich and its hand cranked river ferry, mighty Caracol, the ATM Cave, and the waterfalls of Mountain Pine Ridge, all guided through Belize Hub Tours with experienced local guides. River tubing, cooking classes, and rum tastings run on site, and airport transfers can be timed to the Frankfurt arrivals, so the journey from touchdown to riverside villa is seamless.
Winter dates at small Belizean properties book out well ahead, and the first season of a new European route will only add to the demand. Travelers planning a dry season 2027/28 trip should claim flights and villas early: message Villa Massis with your dates and book direct for the best rates and first choice of villas.
A bigger door to Belize

Minister of Tourism Hon. Anthony Mahler called the new service strategically important to Belize’s tourism industry, part of a wider push to diversify source markets and expand international connectivity, and the timing is right: with airlift growing from North America and now Europe, Belize is easier to reach than it has ever been, while remaining the small, personal, uncrowded destination travelers fall in love with.
